Less than 12 hours after the demise of Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed his successor as Deputy Land Forces.
Gen Muhoozi has promoted Brig Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga to Major General and appointed him the Deputy Commander of the UPDF Land Forces.
Maj Gen Takirwa died at 6am on Saturday at UPDF National Referral hospital in Mbuya, Kampala. UPDF Spokesperson, Col Chris Magezi, said Maj Gen Takirwa succumbed to complications related to stroke.
“The appointment took effect in December 2025 after Major General Takirwa fell ill. Major General Ssemwanga replaces Major General Francis Takirwa (RIP) who passed away this morning after illness,” Col Magezi said.
Maj Gen Ssemwanga has been serving as the Contingent Commander of UPDF troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Before his deployment to Somalia towards the end of 2024, Ssemwanga served as Commander of 1st Infantry Division headquarterered at Kakiri, Wakiso District.
