Unknown gunmen have shot dead a businessman in Amuru district.

Nizeyimana Obed was shot at about 9:17 pm on Thursday while in his shop in Labongo Village, Pagak Parish in Amuru Town Council. Obed was a renowned dealer in curtains, bed sheets and operated a mobile money and agent banking business in the area.

Denis Lakwonyero, a businessman and an eyewitness told Uganda Radio Network Friday that he was outside his shop when he saw three people entering Obed’s agent banking shop. Lakwonyero noted that the assailants rod a motorcycle adding that after entering the shop, he heard gunshots.

According to him, after the assailants fled the scene, he was among the first people who rushed inside the shop, but found Obed already fighting for his life.

“They shot his right chest slightly below the breast. There was a lot of blood coming from the gunshot wound at the time,” he said.

Lakwonyero said Obed was rushed to Lacor Health Centre III in Pabbo Town Council but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa West Public Relations Officer, told Uganda Radio Network Friday that investigations into the brutal murder have commenced, while a manhunt for the three unknown assailants is ongoing.

According to Mudong, shortly after the incident, the assailants were pursued by police officers and community members, forcing them to abandon their numerous motorcycles before fleeing into the bushes. He said the assailants robbed an unspecified amount of money from the deceased’s shop after shooting him.

Mudong said the motorcycle abandoned by the assailants has been exhibited at Amuru Central Police Station, adding a team of detectives visited the scene, made documentation and recorded statements of key eyewitnesses.

He however, advised mobile money operators to desist from operating at late hours of the nigh,t which puts their lives at risks.

Obed’s body has been transported to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital pending postmortem, and a case of murder by shooting has since been registered at Amuru Central Police Station.

Meanwhile the Police in Nwoya district have arrested two suspects in connection to vandalism of high voltage electricity power lines along the Karuma Pakwach highway.

The suspects have been identified as 20-year-old Boniface Lapyem and Emmanuel Lukwiya, 22, all residents of Pawatomero East Village, Pawatomero Parish, Purongo Sub County in Nwoya District.

Police recovered 70 angle bars from the suspects that were reportedly stolen from the high-voltage pylons between February and May this yea,r within Agung Village and Karuma junction along Karuma-Pakwach Highway.

Mudong said the duo are currently being detained at Nwoya Central Police Station for interrogation before being handed to Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited to be produced before the utility court in Kampala-URN.
