The High Court in Fort Portal has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 10 years imprisonment for aggravated defilement of his niece.
Justice Vincent Emmy Mugabo on Monday heard that Patrick Bright a resident of Kisenda village in Kisomoro subcounty Bunyangabu District defiled his 10-year-old niece withbwhom they were staying several occasions.
Harriet Adubango that State Attorney told the court that on November 26, 2025, the victim and the accused had gone to a vigil in their neighborhood when local residents observed Baguma touching the victim inappropriately and became suspicious.
The concerned members informed the village chairperson who also reported Bright to the police. During police investigations, the victim disclosed that Baguma had defiled her on four separate occasions.
While appearing before the judge, Bright pleaded guilty to the offence and requested a lighter sentence of at least five months citing frequent illness.
While sentencing him, Justice Mugabo noted that Bright had abused the trust his family had placed in him as a guardian of the victim and being her uncle he was supposed to protect her.
However, the judge also noted that the accused had not wasted court’s time and had demonstrated remorse. He was convicted and sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.
Justice Mugabo informed the convict that he had a right to appeal the sentence. Meanwhile the same court sentenced 21-year-old Amon Twebembere, to nine years in prison for the aggravated defilement of a nine-year-old girl.
The court heard that on May 2, 2025, at Kirika Village in Kyakatwire Town Council, Kyenjojo District, the victim had gone to fetch water from a well with a friend at around 4:00 PM when they met Twebembere and he chased them. As the victim ran, she fell down, and the accused grabbed and defiled her.
Court heard that upon returning home, the victim reported the incident to her mother who also notified the police.
