Buddu County leadership is seeking 734 million shillings to commence the planned construction of a multipurpose sports complex, which will serve as their home ground and support the nurturing of talents in the area.
Jude Muleke, the Buddu County Chief, indicates that the money is required to undertake the first phase of the construction works and set the pace for the project. He indicates that Buganda Kingdom allocated them a ten-acre piece of land, which is adjacent to the Buddu County headquarters, where they planned to construct a modern stadium that will host a wide range of sports activities.
He says they have considered conducting different fundraising activities that include, among others, organising marathons and periodic dinners, seeking partnerships and generous financial contributions to support the actualisation of the project.
According to him, the Buddu County, which comprises the four districts of Masaka, Lwengo, Bukomansimbi, Kalungu and Kyotera, do not have appropriate public stadiums, which limit the nurturing of sports talents and hosting of zonal tournaments.
Muleke explains that often the Buddu County football team has also faced challenges of securing the appropriate playing field for the Masaza Cup competitions, which prompted them to begin construction of their home ground.
Cue out; ……wetabe mu kudduka.”// Michael Mulindwa, the Nyendo-Mukungwe Division Chairperson, observes that upon its completion, the stadium will be a great complement to the Masaka Recreational Grounds, which has for a long time served as the only sports facility whose construction was funded directly by the government.
He says that the proposed sports complex is a grand development opportunity for the Masaka city urban local government and the sub-region, pleading that he will mobilise the political leadership to fully support the project.
Moses Kigozi, the Chief Coordinator for the marathon slated for April 30th, says that in addition to the local business community and other Buganda loyalists, they are also mobilising international sports enthusiasts to support the realisation of the dream.
He indicates that his team has set out to popularise the marathon by selling sports kits to different groups of people, as one of the ways of raising the required money-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
