A suspected tear gas explosion on Boxing Day left a 17-year-old boy with a severely shattered hand in Muhanga Town Council. The victim, Dalton Akoragye, is the son of Rev. Jasper Byaruhanga, parish priest of All Saints Church, Muhanga.
Rev. Byaruhanga said the incident occurred at around 7:40 p.m. on December 26, 2025, in Muhanga Central Ward as Akoragye was closing the church doors. “A sudden loud blast went off. When we rushed to him, his left hand was shattered and bleeding heavily. Tear gas smoke filled the area, and a suspected tear gas canister was found on the ground,” Rev. Byaruhanga said.
Police were immediately alerted. Elly Maate, Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed that the teenager was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Fragments of the suspected tear gas canister were recovered and documented as evidence. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the explosion occurred and how Akoragye came into possession of the ordnance.
Maate noted that the victim’s family lives near Muhanga Police Barracks, raising suspicions that the teenager may have picked up the canister from the barracks for unknown reasons.
