The Anglican Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Kosea Odongo, has condemned leaders who prioritize personal gain instead of providing essential services to citizens.
Speaking during the requiem mass of Dr. Godfrey Egwau at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Soroti, Bishop Odongo said leaders have abandoned the very people who entrusted them with power, leaving hospitals without the equipment required to save lives.
The concern was triggered by remarks from Dr. Fred Kirya, who noted that Dr. Egwau might have been saved if Soroti Regional Referral Hospital had basic diagnostic equipment.
He said the late doctor was only referred to other facilities because the hospital lacked the tools needed to detect his condition early.
Bishop Odongo accused leaders of accessing treatment abroad while ordinary citizens suffer in poorly equipped hospitals.
He said government performance should be measured by roads, hospitals, and functioning public systems—not political power or personal allowances.
Bishop Odongo urged Ugandans to pray for leaders who can identify and solve national problems rather than focusing on personal benefits.
Dr. Egwau, a respected gynecologist who served at Mbale and Soroti regional hospitals, died of advanced cancer. He will be buried at his ancestral home in Arapai, Soroti District, on November 30, 2025.
