Domestic violence is one of the major causes of poverty and family breakdown in Uganda, the Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Dr Robert Muhirwa Akiiki, has said. Bishop Muhirwa made the remarks on Wednesday while officially opening the CANA seminar at Kamwenge Catholic Parish in Kamwenge District.

While presiding over the Holy Eucharist Mass, Bishop Muhirwa said violence in families continues to affect development and has contributed to the high number of Ugandans living below the poverty line. He explained that when couples are always fighting, they have no time to work and cannot harmonize on developmental projects that can uplift the economic status of their families.

He urged couples to promote peace, love, dialogue, and unity in their homes to build stable families and communities. The seminar, which will run until Saturday, has brought together married couples from the Catholic parishes of Kamwenge, Kicwamba, Holy Trinity Kitagwenda, and Nyakasura under the Kamwenge Deanery. CANA is a Catholic-based ministry that serves married couples, engaged couples, and families, with a strong focus on strengthening the sacrament of marriage.

The Bishop also commended the Cana Foundation for its role in strengthening the sacrament of Holy Matrimony within the diocese and across the country. He encouraged participants to spread the teachings of Cana beyond the Church and into their communities to promote responsible family life and Christian values. Fr. James Isabakaki urged participants to put into practice the lessons acquired during the seminar to improve their spiritual, social, and economic well-being. Aloysius Mugisa said couples should act as role models in the community so that the young generation can have faith in marriage-URN.
