Arua City Council has kicked off preparations to commemorate the belated International Youth Day 2025, with a call to the government to prioritize strategic skills training for job creation. Globally, International Youth Day is marked on August 12th.
However, Arua City postponed its celebrations due to engagements for the World Tourism Day and the Cities Alliance regional dialogue for the Sustainable Integration of Displacement Affected Communities (SUIDAC).
The commemoration, scheduled for October 3rd under the theme “Local Youth Actions for Sustainable Development Goals and Beyond”, follows Uganda’s national celebrations held on September 19th under the theme “Youth Advancing Socio-Economic Transformation through Technology and Partnerships.”
During a press briefing at Arua City Hall on Monday, Emmanuel Angudubo, the Assistant Town Clerk, said it is important to keep the youth agenda at the forefront since they make up the majority of Uganda’s population.
Jimmy Droma, the Youth Focal Person for Arua City, emphasized the need to recognize the youth as key players in national development.
Gift Magezi, the Arua City Youth Chairperson, encouraged young people to use the day to project a positive image and warned them against being manipulated by self-seeking politicians, especially during election periods.
Meanwhile, Francis Ayume, the Refugee Coordinator in Arua City, urged host youths to take advantage of opportunities that come with refugee presence in the region.
With support from development partners, activities lined up include cleaning Arua City, school quizzes with awards, a youth parliament cinema show, and games and sports competitions between refugees and host youths, all leading up to Friday’s commemoration.
