Arua City Engineer Charles Omona has been arrested for alleged abuse of office and mismanagement of 1 billion shillings meant for the Road Fund.
Omona was handed over to the police on Wednesday, following a meeting of members of the road fund committee.
The Arua City road fund committee, chaired by Geoffrey Feta, the Ayivu East MP, together with the other MPs, sat on Tuesday to discuss value for the I billion Shillings money that was remitted to the City in the 2024-25 Financial Year under the road fund.
However, after reportedly establishing how the money was spent, the committee decided to hand over the City Engineer to the CIID and subsequently was arrested and detained at Arua CPS as further investigations continue.
The committee established that out of the 1 billion Shillings, Omona used over 400 million Shillings to hire a grader from Obongi district local government, while the balance of 500 million Shillings was unaccounted for.
Further investigations also revealed that the Engineering department paid 1.6 million Shillings daily for six hours of work done by the grader each day. Eng. Omona was charged with abuse of office and mismanagement of government funds.
Jimmy Anguyo, the Police Spokesperson for West Nile, confirmed the arrest and detention of Omona at the CPS but declined to divulge further details, adding that investigations are still ongoing into the incident.
Eng. Charles Omona was recruited as City Engineer for Arua, replacing Eng. Anthony Dradri, who was interdicted for corruption-related offences that the State House Anti-Corruption investigated in Arua.
Currently, the poor and deteriorating state of most roads in Arua City has raised concern from locals, with some accusing the political and technical leaders of ignoring the alarming state of public infrastructure in the City.
