The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Rt Rev Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu has urged the people of Tooro to remain united and avoid words and actions that could deepen divisions following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Preaching at the funeral service for the late king at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal City on Saturday, Kaziimba said grief should bring the people of Tooro together rather than create new divisions.
He urged the people of Tooro to be careful about the words they speak during the period of grief warning that statements made in anger or pain could cause lasting divisions and damage the legacy of the fallen king.
He warned that periods of mourning can revive historical disagreements and enmity, urging the people of Tooro to put the past behind them maintain dignity and respect for the kingdom.
Archbishop Kaziimba challenged the people to preserve Oyo’s legacy not only by talking about him but by continuing the causes he championed like environmental conservation, the fight against HIV/AIDS, promotion of tourism, youth empowerment, sports among others.
The Archbishop also called on people holding properties belonging to Tooro Kingdom to return them, saying Oyo had advocated for the restoration of the kingdom’s historical properties.
He said Oyo had consistently advocated for the return of historical properties belonging to the kingdom and urged those in possession of such properties to honour his call by handing them back to the kingdom.
The Archbishop said the properties were part of the history and identity of Tooro and should not continue to be a source of conflict or division among the people.
Omukama Oyo died at the age of 34 on August 27 from the United States of America where he was receiving treatment. He will be laid to rest on Saturday afternoon at Karambi royal burial grounds-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
