Amolatar District National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairperson, Kamilo Olwit, is in police custody for alleged mismanagement of funds meant to facilitate the party’s Local Council I (LCI) flag bearer and women councillors’ primary elections. Olwit, a resident of Inomo Cell in Amolatar Town Council, was arrested on Tuesday after party members complained that they received only Shs50,000 instead of the Shs100,000 allocated to each village under the NRM’s election facilitation programme.
The funds were earmarked to support the conduct of NRM LCI flag bearer and women councillors’ elections across all 16 sub-counties in Amolatar District. North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the arrest, saying police had opened General Enquiry File (GEF) No. 038/2026 to investigate the allegations. Okema said preliminary investigations indicate that the NRM released the funds nationwide together with guidelines on how they were to be utilised.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the NRM released the funds countrywide and issued a circular outlining how the money was to be utilized,” Okema said, adding that investigators are establishing whether the funds were distributed in accordance with the party’s guidelines. Police have already recorded statements from several party members who claim they received less than the stipulated amount, while more complainants are expected to record statements.
Olwit is being detained at Amolatar Central Police Station as investigations continue. According to Okema, the case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for legal guidance once investigations are complete. Police have also urged leaders entrusted with public or organisational resources to uphold accountability and integrity.
Reacting to the arrest, the NRM Director of External Affairs, Major (Rtd) Awich Pollar, condemned leaders who divert party funds, saying similar complaints had previously been raised by grassroots party members. He warned party officials across the country to ensure that election facilitation funds are used strictly in line with party guidelines or risk facing legal action.
The arrest comes as the ruling NRM continues with its village-level party elections aimed at reorganising and strengthening its grassroots leadership structures ahead of future electoral activities-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
