The Kabarole District LCV Chairperson, Richard Rwabuhinga, has withdrawn from the Burahya County Parliamentary race. Rwabuhinga, who also serves as the NRM General Secretary in Kabarole, made the announcement on Saturday during President Yoweri Museveni’s campaign rally at Kabura Playground in Fort Portal City.

The former Uganda Local Governments Association (ULGA) president had been nominated as an Independent candidate after losing the National Resistance Movement primaries to Joseph Mugenyi.

Rwabuhinga explained that he decided to step aside following a meeting with President Museveni in November, during which he was advised to support the party’s flag bearer in the interest of NRM unity. He said that out of loyalty to the party, he has asked all his supporters to rally behind Mugenyi, the official NRM candidate.

Mugenyi will now face the Alliance for National Transformation candidate, Denis Tumusime, in the general election for the Burahya County MP seat. The race has also shifted on the opposition side, after Ronald Muhumuza, the former National Unity Platform flag bearer, crossed to the NRM and exited the contest.

Victoria Businge Rusoke, the Kabarole District NRM Chairperson, revealed that 184 Independent candidates who had been nominated for various positions in the district have withdrawn and pledged support for NRM flag bearers. Mohamed Murungi, a resident of Kabarole, said Rwabuhinga made the right decision to step down for the NRM flag bearer, noting that as a good leader, he had to be an example.

In September, the NRM Secretary General issued a directive requiring party leaders who had been nominated as Independents for the 2026 elections to resign from their party positions and align behind official party candidates-URN.
