A stray buffalo has killed a mother of 12 children in Kaabong District. Catherine Nakong, 40, a resident of Dangasil Village, Lomodoit Parish in Lolelia South Sub-County, was attacked on Saturday, November 16, 2025, at around 6:30 pm.

Nakong was walking home through Lotepeleit Valley in Lolelia Sub-County when the buffalo mauled her to death. Bosco Oumo, the Chairperson of Lolelia South, confirmed the incident and said they had notified Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) management at Kidepo.

He noted that the tragedy reflects the broader human–wildlife conflict affecting Kaabong and neighbouring districts. Martin Oriem, the Kidepo Community Liaison Officer, said UWA was aware of the fatal attack and had committed to covering the burial costs. He added that the Authority was working with the family to identify one member to follow up on compensation claims.

Local leaders report that at least three people have been killed by wild animals in Lolelia South this year. The victims include Lokong Lomilo and Lokol, who were attacked by a buffalo and an elephant in February and May, respectively.

In 2022, another resident of Kitapan Parish in Lolelia South was also killed by an elephant. The government is currently erecting a perimeter wall around Kidepo National Park in an effort to reduce human–wildlife conflict in communities bordering the park.
