Police in Jinja are investigating the brutal killing of Moses Ntwalume, a local security guard from Nakabango Cell in the Northern Division of Jinja City. Ntwalume had been deployed overnight to guard a busy motorcycle parking lot.

He is believed to have been struck on the head with a hoe, causing his death instantly. His body has been taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem and eventual handover to his relatives for burial.

Preliminary reports suggest that the assailants, whose exact number of stolen motorcycles remains unknown, may have targeted the guard as part of their plan.

Musa Kayiiza, the LC1 chairperson of Nakabango Cell, warned that their community is increasingly plagued by unemployed youths living extravagant lifestyles, whom they suspect are driving the recent surge in violent crime.

He urged security agencies to intensify investigations into this wave of criminality before more lives are lost, emphasising the urgent need for decisive action to restore safety in the area.

He added that recent attacks, including this killing, have caused widespread panic, with residents locking their homes as early as 7 p.m. to avoid confrontations with panga-wielding gangs.

Meanwhile, Ivan Mukisa, the GISO of Mafubira Ward, confirmed that over five deaths linked to panga-wielding men have been recorded in the past week alone, with a dozen others sustaining serious injuries in various health facilities across Jinja City.

Mukisa suspects that the perpetrators are “strange residents” with no clear source of income, who are now orchestrating a wave of violent criminal activity. “We have gathered intelligence implicating several suspects over the past month and are coordinating with top security leadership to apprehend them,” he said.

However, Mukisa acknowledged that prosecutions often face setbacks as surviving victims are reluctant to report their attackers for fear of reprisals, complicating law enforcement efforts.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity as investigations intensify to curb the rising tide of violent crime in Jinja.
