Ugandan long-distance runner Sarah Chelangat, the national record holder in the half marathon, has confirmed her participation in the Rome Diamond League, scheduled for June 2nd in Italy.
Chelangat will compete against a highly competitive field, including Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet and Margaret Okidor, as well as Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, Matar Alemayo, and Aleshign. Uganda’s Winnie Nanyondo will serve as the pace setter, leading the race for the first 2,000 meters.
Chelangat heads into the Rome Diamond League on the back of a recent victory in the 5,000 meters at the Kip Keino Classic held in Nairobi, Kenya. Speaking about her upcoming appearance, Chelangat described the Diamond League as a critical part of her preparations for the Tokyo Championships:
“I and my coach thought, better to have more track racing to gain speed endurance and speed, which is pivotal to face off other elite athletes in Tokyo,” said Chelangat. Her coach, Ndiwa Ruto, said their current training program is focused on enhancing speed and endurance, aimed at maximizing Chelangat’s performance in upcoming international competitions-URN.
