Arua Mayor Disowns Fake X Account Using His Campaign Poster

Police in Arua City are investigating a case of impersonation after a fake X (formerly Twitter) account was created in the name of Mayor Sam Wadri Nyakua, using his official 2026–2031 NRM campaign poster. Nyakua says he was shocked on Tuesday when supporters began calling to question divisive statements being shared from the account.

He told journalists on Wednesday that he has never owned or used an X account, and suspects the poster he shared over the weekend on WhatsApp was downloaded and used to create the fake profile. One of the posts from the impersonated account reads: “The Ayivu Business Community head by my good brother Mr. Oria is fully behind me and I shall work with them closely to protect their business interests and stand firm on the pertinent matters of Ayivu.”

Nyakua says he has since reported the matter to police and is prepared to pursue legal action against whoever is behind the account.

He also urged all political aspirants and supporters to track how campaign materials are shared, warning that carelessness may lead to unnecessary legal and financial complications.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Bwambale, the District Police Commander of Arua City Metropolitan Area, confirmed receiving the mayor’s complaint. He said investigations are underway and that the police will ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

As NRM primary campaigns intensify, several aspirants have turned to social media to rally support. However, authorities have also noted a surge in impersonation and mudslinging. Police say the political crimes desk at Arua Central Police Station is fully equipped to handle cyber-related electoral offenses during this political season-URN.
