President Yoweri Museveni has officially commissioned new road infrastructure funded under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program in Kasese Municipality. Under the 2019–2024 implementation period, Kasese received UGX 54 billion, which facilitated the construction and upgrading of 10 roads totaling 7 kilometers, the procurement of a garbage collection truck, and the fencing of municipal council offices.

Some of the newly commissioned roads include Rwenzori Road (1.33 km), Bus Circular (0.432 km), and Stanley Road (0.43 km), among others. Speaking during the launch held on Wednesday, President Museveni emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting a multi-modal transport system.

He called on local leaders to mobilize communities to participate in the money economy. Museveni attributed Uganda’s slow pace of development to the failure of leaders and citizens to embrace the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) message of wealth creation. He urged leaders across the country to focus on empowering people to actively engage with government programs as a pathway to socio-economic transformation.

The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Judith Nabakooba, hailed Kasese as a model municipality, revealing that local revenue had increased from UGX 399 million in 2019 to approximately UGX 1.4 billion in 2024, owing to improved infrastructure.

She explained that the new infrastructure has enhanced mobility for the business community and the general public, while the addition of street lighting has boosted security and spurred a vibrant night economy.

Nabakooba urged local leaders to safeguard the new infrastructure and encourage the community to use it to generate social and economic benefits. She also hinted at a new phase of the USMID project.
