Police in Masindi are hunting for 30-year-old Anatoli Irumba, a resident of Pakanyi village in Pakanyi Sub County, who is accused of murdering his mother following a dispute over food. Irumba is alleged to have killed his 70-year-old mother, Joyce Nyangireki, by striking her on the head with a blunt object, killing her instantly.
According to Ronald Byabasaija, the area LC1 Chairperson, the incident occurred after Irumba accused his mother of denying him food. He told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that after the attack, Irumba fled to an unknown location.
Byabasaija noted that residents heard Nyangireki screaming for help and rushed to her home, only to find her lying dead in a pool of blood. He also revealed that Irumba is an ex-convict who had recently been released from Masindi Government Prison, where he had been serving a sentence for attempted murder.
Florence Katusabe, the area female councilor, said the suspect is known in the village as a notorious drug abuser, which had raised concerns among residents even before the incident. Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the murder and said efforts are underway to track down the suspect.
Hakiza appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by providing any information that could lead to Irumba’s arrest. Police transported Nyangireki’s body to Masindi General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination before handing it over to the family for burial arrangements-URN.
