The lifeless body of a five-year-old girl, Recho Lakica, a resident of Toolit Village in Ajali Sub-county in Agago District, has been found in a bush days after she was reported missing by her parent. Police have since opened a case of suspected murder. Lakica, a pupil at St. Joseph Nursery and Primary School, reportedly left home on Friday, April 25, 2025, heading to school with other children.

However, she did not return home. Her friends who had gone to look for her at midday failed to find her either at school or at home. Her disappearance was immediately reported at Agago Central Police Station, which led to a community-wide search. Despite several days of searching, there was no trace of her until Monday evening, April 28, when four youths hunting wild birds found her decomposing body in a bush at Lacan Kweri Village.

According to Joe Oloya, the Regional Police Spokesperson, the body was found naked, severely decomposed, covered with maggots, and one foot was missing. Police transferred the body to Kalongo Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem. Police registered the case and, stated that no arrests have been made yet, though investigations are ongoing.

A resident, Emmanuel Omara, expressed disbelief, saying, “The little lost child has been found dead.” He urged parents and guardians to take extra care in protecting their children. According to police records, Uganda registered 4,329 homicide cases by the end of 2024, a 1.9% increase from the 4,248 cases reported in 2023-URN.
