Having confirmed that the president is determined to have their man rot in jail and he won’t be listening to anyone calling for mercy, relatives and friends of jailed police constable Alex Katungi have started on a campaign to contact all his friends, cronies and well-wishers plus in-laws to raise a war chest of some sort.

With his ex-protectors inside the police force backing off fearing to face the wrath of the president, Katungi’s best pals have concluded that their man will only be saved through investing in a Molly Katanga-like strong legal defense team.

Led by a one KENNY, Katungi’s best friends spent much of the weekend working out a budget and contacting top defense lawyers in Kampala who must be brought on board to boost former deputy attorney general Mwesigwa Rukutana who is already being overwhelmed. They are aware that many more criminal charges are going to be preferred against Katungi as state house anti-corruption continues investigating and digging up more rot.

There are also other victims of his torture and violent environment protect operations in areas like Munyonyo, Kitende, Kajjansi, Katale, Kasenge, Nakawuka, Kyengera, Nsangi and Entebbe who are filing private cases in the civil division of the high court under the human rights enforcement provisions. They want him to pay them hundreds of millions for the torture he did to them in his hey days. These will require Katungi to part with hundreds of millions to pay for damages the civil courts will be awarding.

The criminal charges only attract jail terms and no need to pay hefty sums of money.

Besides preparing a big budget to invest in high profile defense lawyers, the Katungi pals are also considering using some of the money to try to give sweeteners to compromise some of the state witnesses, complainants and investigators and prosecutors involved in the case. Some such friends want an attempt to be made to engage some of the judicial officers who will be involved in trying such cases.

“We are aware this isn’t going to be easy and our friend will soon be bankrupted through these court cases. Imagine a few days ago we struggled and raised 5m for his bail in the Kajjansi court but all that went to waste when he was immediately re-arrested and slapped with fresh charges at another magistrate’s court of Makindye,” says one of the best friends involved in the fundraising efforts.

It has also been revealed that those involved in the fundraising are also hopeful that the Buziga apartrments-owning Basiima family whose daughter Sarah, a nurse is Katungi’s wife, will be coming on board in in a big way to help contribute towards the jailed police constable’s rapidly growing legal fees.

Some friends are of the view that no amount of investment in the legal defense team will save Katungi because of the president’s determination to have him severely punished for his alleged wrongful acts.

In a related development, some of the close relatives like a Sophie who recently returned from a peace keeping mission in South Sudan, are said to be unbothered with Katungi’s woes because in his hey days, the jailed police constable never treated them well.Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
