Key strategists in the Katonga based PFF have come to the conclusion that Dr. Kizza Besigye may never come out of prison because Museveni believes he wanted to assassinate him working with foreign groups. They are sure that no amount of legal arguments will get Dr. KB out of trouble. “We have realized this is a political and not legal dispute. We shall have to tackle the situation politically,” says a PFF insider.

Their fallback position, since KB is unwilling to apologize and seek pardon from Museveni, now is to use politics to rescue their patriarch. Dr. KB should become a candidate for president in 2026 and PFF intends to collect his signatures so that he gets nominated even when he is inside Luzira prison. This happened in 2005 when political pressure was used to free KB from Luzira on treason and rape charges.

The PFF guys say that it’s important that they move with Bobi Wine on this issue whereby the NUP big man shouldn’t be uncomfortable with the prospect of KB getting nominated for president. The strategists want NUP to remain complementary and prepared to have minimum political relationship with Besigye’s people at Katonga and the idea is to pressurize Museveni while creating additional publicity for Besigye’s cause as he continues languishing in jail.

The Katonga group members want Bobi Wine and his NUP group to remain engaged and outspoken about the issue of Besigye and other political prisoners the way they have been doing because that solidarity too is important. PFF is ready to assure Bobi Wine that once Besigye gets released through that nomination related pressure, he will bow out of the race and declare support for him because after all he personally isn’t interested in running for presidency anymore. A freed Besigye will then conduct joint campaigns with candidate Bobi Wine for presidency against Museveni for the 2026 vote which won’t be easy for Museveni because of growing numbers of young and first time voters.
