Clergymen and politicians gathered in Asinge Village, Apuuton Parish, Toroma County, Katakwi District, on Tuesday, for a funeral service in honor of 105-year-old Rebecca Akol, a revered Christian of the Apuuton Church of Uganda, whose life inspired generations of clergy in the region.

Akol, who passed away naturally at her home over the weekend, was celebrated as a God-fearing woman whose unwavering dedication to the church and community remained steadfast even at her advanced age. During her sendoff in Toroma Archdeaconry, a section of clergy from the Soroti Church of Uganda praised Akol for her service and influence, with some offering gifts in thanksgiving.

Her remarkable legacy includes inspiring four men to join the clergy, all of whom now serve as archdeacons in different parts of the region. Her biography noted that she expressed her emotions through hymns—singing Rhyme 137 when joyful and Song 109 when in distress, a hymn representing a believer’s conversation with their soul.

The burial ceremony turned into a celebration of life, as attendees shared touching memories of her unwavering faith and impact on the church community.

Rev. Canon Simon Peter Otukei, Archdeacon of Amuria CoU, described Akol as a blessing to the ministry in Apuuton. He quoted Proverbs 10:27: “The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short.” He reminded mourners that while the average lifespan is 70 years, God grants longevity to those who live righteously.

Rev. Otukei further shared that since beginning his church service in 1989, Akol’s encouragement led to the ordination of other clergymen who now serve across the region, including Rev. Charles Peter Okalany, now Archdeacon of Ngariam Archdeaconry; Rev. Ikesit; Rev. Robert Ariko, now serving in Serere; and Rev. James Opio, a diocesan youth worker. Each of them continues to pass on Akol’s messages of faith and dedication.

Rev. Canon Julius Ariko, Archdeacon of Toroma Archdeaconry, said the church has lost a beloved elder who was passionate about guiding fellow Christians, even in her old age. Violent Akurut Adome, the NRM flag bearer and former Woman MP, recounted how the late Akol once told her she would like her to attend her burial—a request made while she was still alive, underscoring the close bond between the two.

Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Geoffrey Omolo urged Christians to emulate Akol’s sincerity and faith, saying she lived a life full of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Born on June 24, 1920, in Morunyang Village, Toroma, Akol passed away on April 5, 2025, and was laid to rest today at the home of her late husband, Sedekio Ojakolin, of the Itikok-Ikelimo clan. She is survived by six children and 218 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
