The construction of a mortuary at Nabilatuk Health Centre IV has started.

The district has been struggling to keep bodies, and in most cases, the facility had no choice but to share a general ward with dead bodies due to a lack of a mortuary, or use the services of Tokora Health IV.

The contract to construct a mortuary was awarded to Loree Trusted Developers and Suppliers Limited for 59 million Shillings. The funds are from the District Discretion Development Grant (DDEG), and the works are expected to take 3 months.

Hussein Malunda, the Deputy Chief Administration Officer for Nabilatuk district, said that they have been struggling to manage the bodies due to a lack of a mortuary.

Malunda said that once completed, the facility will help them to address the challenge of people abandoning bodies in the wards. He noted that it has been a common practice for the local community to abandon their loved ones in the health facilities when they die.

Kyeyune Ssenyonjo, the Nabilatuk Resident District Commissioner, called for close monitoring of the works by all stakeholders to ensure value for money.

John Bosco Alinga, the LCI Chairperson of Campshwahili village, noted that they used to get stuck with unclaimed bodies of the people killed in the bushes.

He observed that the facility addresses the challenge of patients running away from the ward in fear of bodies, as used to be the case before, when they could share the space with bodies.

The construction of the mortuary is part of the other infrastructure developments ongoing at Nabilatuk Health Centre IV. Other projects include: the construction of a medical store by the Ministry of Health with funding from the Global Fund for 718 million Shillings, and the construction of a modern theatre under an Italian loan for 667 million Shillings-URN.
