The police in Kikuube are hunting for a Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier for allegedly shooting dead a man in Kamwokya Village, Kyangwali sub-county.
The soldier, Pte Charles Onen of RA 227872 PT, is attached to the marine force at Buhuka Detach in Kyangwali sub-county in Kikuube.
He is accused of shooting and killing Benon Kanyesige, a resident of Kamwokya village in Kyangwali sub-county, on March 2, 2025.
Onen reportedly picked a misunderstanding with Kanyesige for unknown reasons. Following the altercation, the soldier who was armed with his gun reportedly shot Kanyesiga, killing him on the spot.
After shooting Kanyesiga, the soldier disappeared to an unknown destination to date.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, says that the soldier fled to an unknown location. Hakiza says detectives have been deployed in the area to investigate the cause of the shooting, and the hunt for the soldier is ongoing.
