Kisoro District has spoken, and the message is loud and clear that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) is the people’s choice. In a by-election that saw heated competition, NRM emerged victorious with a total of 94,441 votes, leaving opposition parties scrambling to make sense of their paltry showings.
Independent candidate Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, who clinched the top spot, secured an impressive 50,459 votes, while her NRM counterpart, Kabagyeni Rose, followed closely with 44,982 votes. Kabagyeni, who previously represented Kisoro in the 10th Parliament, had a narrow edge over Akifeza in the NRM primaries, but the final result was clear, Akifeza had the support of the people.
As the dust settles on the by-election, Museveni’d Deputy Press Secretary, Hajj Kirunda Farouk, wasted no time in celebrating the victory. He had some choice words for the opposition, particularly the National Unity Platform (NUP), whose performance in Kisoro left much to be desired. With only 903 votes in a district of five constituencies, Farouk didn’t mince words, “It seems NUP has mistaken Kisoro for a small village. A mere 903 votes? It’s like trying to fill a bucket with a teaspoon!”
In a sharp yet playful jab, he added, “While NUP struggles to gather a handful of votes, Akifeza and Kabagyeni show us that the real power lies with the NRM. The people of Kisoro have spoken, and their message is loud and clear: we trust the NRM.”
The results also saw smaller parties like FDC, PPP, and UPC trail far behind, all barely scratching the hundred mark. With only a year to go until the 2026 General Elections, the NRM is riding high on a wave of success, while the opposition, particularly NUP, will need to take a long, hard look at their strategies.
As the saying goes, “A tree is known by its fruit,” and Kisoro has clearly shown where the real roots lie. The NRM, with its united front, has once again proven its political might in Uganda’s heartland. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com.
