Transport has been disrupted along the Kisoro–Rubuguri–Rushaga–Nkuringo road in Kisoro District after Mucha Bridge collapsed on Friday afternoon, cutting off a key section used by residents and tourists. The bridge, which connects Bufumbira County and Bukimbiri Constituency, reportedly collapsed after a truck transporting charcoal to Kisoro town damaged the structure, leaving the road impassable.
The incident disrupted the movement of motorists, including tourist vehicles travelling to destinations in the district. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists were later seen attempting to cross the affected section through the water, exposing themselves to possible danger.
Grace Akifeza Ngabirano, the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament and State Minister for Security, called for calm, saying she was in contact with the Ministry of Works and Transport and district authorities to find a short-term solution as efforts to secure a lasting remedy continue.
In a statement issued on Friday evening, the Ministry of Works and Transport confirmed the collapse and advised road users to use an alternative route through Kisoro–Karengyere–Nyanamo–Rubuguri–Rushaga–Nkuringo. The alternative route is expected to allow traffic to continue moving while authorities work to address the damage to Mucha Bridge-URN.
