The Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) Kingdom has announced the suspension of the 60th coronation anniversary celebrations of His Majesty Charles Wesley Mumbere Iremangoma from October 19 to November 14.
The Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Benson Kule Baritazale, announced that the adjustment was necessary due to the absence of the cultural leader, Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere.
The king is currently in Turkey undergoing a scheduled medical review.
The kingdom will now merge the coronation activities with the Omusinga’s birthday celebrations in November. Kule said that all previously issued invitation cards remain valid for the new November 14 date.
The prime minister also gave an assurance that the King is in stable condition, receiving excellent care from medical professionals and the support of the royal family.
He urged the subjects to remain calm and avoid speculation regarding the King’s health.
Mumbere ascended to the throne in 1966, following the passing of his father, Isaya Mukirania Kibanzanga, the first King of Rwenzururu.
Although the Kingdom’s recognition by the Ugandan government came much later, in 2009, the Rwenzururu cultural institution has remained a powerful symbol of identity and resilience for the people of the Rwenzori region.
This year’s anniversary would have been the fourth coronation celebration presided over by the Omusinga since his release from detention in 2023.
The King had spent several years in detention following his 2016 arrest on charges of treason, terrorism, and murder, after the tragic military assault on his palace that left over a hundred of his subjects dead-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
