The High Court in Iganga has sentenced eight people to death for the murder of two men in a mob justice incident in Namayingo District. Justice David Batema convicted Odongo Misaki, Karoli Lwanga, Musoke Yakuti, Kabwiso Mairadi, Talisuna Muzaham, Wandera Karim, Wasire Pius and Latifu Nyanga on two counts of murder on October 7, 2026.
The court sentenced each of the eight to death following their conviction over the August 2024 killing of Bagume Robert and Okech Moses at Bukewa Central Village, Bukewa Parish, Buhemba Sub-county in Namayingo District. The prosecution established that the two victims had gone fishing on Lake Victoria when they were intercepted over allegations of theft.
The mob allegedly tied their hands behind their backs and took them to the home of Odongo Misaki, the Local Council One chairperson of Bukewa Central Zone. The two men were subsequently beaten by a mob and died from traumatic brain injuries. The prosecution presented an identification witness who identified all eight accused persons in court.
The witness identified Misaki as the LC1 chairperson and identified Lwanga, Musoke and Nyanga as village mates. He also identified Kabwiso, Muzaham, Karim and Wasire. The witness told the court that several of the accused went to the lake where Bagume and Okech had been fishing before police took the two men away.
Jonathan Tumushime, a State Attorney attached to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Iganga, prosecuted the case. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said the convictions and sentences reaffirm its commitment to holding accountable people who participate in mob justice and unlawful killings while upholding the rule of law and the right to life-URN.
