Leaders of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in Kitgum have urged members to work with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), warning against divisions and conflicts as the organisation expands its structures. The call was made Friday during a meeting at the RDC’s boardroom to strategies on PLU’s mobilisation and endorsement exercise for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s 2031 presidential bid.
Bernard Canogura, PLU vice coordinator for Kitgum Central Division, said PLU should complement rather than compete with NRM structures. “PLU is a civic organisation, meaning the mother party is NRM. PLU is not here to step on people who were already in NRM,” Canogura said. He urged members conducting registration to work peacefully and avoid forcing people to join.
Charles Bongomin, PLU chairperson for Kitgum Central Division, similarly cautioned leaders against presenting PLU as a replacement for NRM, saying it should support the ruling party through ideas and mobilisation.
Kitgum Resident District Commissioner Jimmy Segawa Ebil said PLU’s emphasis on patriotism, good governance, anti-corruption and national unity was compatible with principles promoted by NRM.
Ebil urged PLU leaders to protect the trust of residents during the endorsement exercise. “As you go to register, be trustworthy, because if you as a leader abuse that trust, it could permanently damage your credibility,” he said.
According to PLU Kitgum coordinator Robinson Onencan Acen, the organisation has 330 members in the district and 64,373 countrywide-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
