Three family members are in custody at Kagadi Central Police Station for allegedly beheading their 95-year-old mother following a dispute over family land. The suspects, identified as Isingoma, Bijja and Tumwine, all residents of Matuutu Village in Bwikara Sub-county, Kagadi District, are accused of killing Josephine Kabagenzi on Saturday night and dumping her body in a nearby sugarcane plantation.
According to information obtained by Uganda Radio Network (URN), the trio allegedly connived to attack and kill their mother before abandoning her body in the plantation. Matuutu Village LC1 Chairperson Christopher Buruge said residents were shocked on Sunday morning when they discovered Kabagenzi’s body.
Buruge said Kabagenzi had recently distributed part of the family land among her children, but some of them protested, claiming that the distribution was unfair and unequal. He said the disagreement over the land could have triggered the attack on their mother.
After the body was discovered, Buruge said he notified Kagadi Police, who responded and commenced investigations that led to the arrest of the three suspects.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing. Hakiza said the suspects will be arraigned before court and charged with murder once investigations are complete.Police retrieved Kabagenzi’s body from the scene and conveyed it to Kagadi Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination before it was handed over to relatives for burial-URN.
