Police in Busia District have launched investigations into the suspected murder and suicide of a married couple who were found dead inside their grass-thatched house in Busime Sub-county. The deceased have been identified as 31-year-old Godfrey Okuku and his 23-year-old wife, Racheal Auma, both residents of Namamera Village, Mundindi Parish.

According to police, residents discovered the bodies on the morning of July 28, 2026. Auma was found lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom, while Okuku’s body was found hanging from a rope inside the same house. Preliminary police findings indicate that the couple may have been involved in a violent domestic dispute before the deaths, although the motive has not yet been established.

Moses Johnson Mugwe, the Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, said the incident was reported by the area LC1 chairperson to Busime Police Post before officers from the Police Investigations Unit visited the scene. A case of suspected murder and suicide has since been registered at Busime Sub-county Police Station and Busia Central Police Station.”Our territorial police in Busime are investigating a suspected murder and suicide involving a married couple after they were found dead in their house. A team from CPS Busia visited the scene and commenced investigations.”

Police recovered several exhibits from the scene, including an axe and a knife with suspected blood stains, new surgical blades, a damaged television set, a solar panel, a radio and other household items believed to be of evidential value. Mugwe said investigators suspect the couple first engaged in a fight before the husband allegedly attacked his wife with an axe as she slept and later took his own life.

The bodies were taken to Masafu General Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations continue. Mugwe urged members of the public experiencing domestic or family conflicts to seek counselling or mediation from relatives, community leaders or religious leaders instead of resorting to violence.”The two bodies were taken to the mortuary pending postmortem examinations. We discourage acts of violence that result in loss of life and encourage people facing domestic disputes to seek other pathways for resolving their differences.”

Residents described the incident as shocking. Auma Nasirumbi, a resident, said the couple had not exhibited any known signs of serious domestic conflict during the time they lived in the village.

Michael Wafula said residents had expected the couple to participate in the LC1 elections but were instead confronted with the tragic news of their deaths. Both bodies were lying at Masafu General Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations as police investigations continued-URN.
