The Government of Japan has commissioned a new classroom block and other education facilities at Amorigoga Primary School in Abongomola Sub-county, Kwania District, in a bid to address classroom shortages caused by increasing pupil enrolment.
The UGX 330 million project, funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), was officially handed over to the school community on Friday by Yoshida Norimasa, the Deputy Ambassador (Deputy Head of Mission) of Japan to Uganda.
Constructed by Tukiz Construction Company and Verona Foundation Limited, the project comprises a two-classroom block, a 17-stance latrine, a head teacher’s office, 76 desks, a 500-watt solar power system and four water tanks. Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Yoshida said the project is intended to lay a strong foundation for Uganda’s future through improved access to quality education.
He reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting initiatives that improve the well-being of communities across Uganda, noting that quality learning begins with a conducive environment.
The head teacher of Amorigoga Primary School, Joel Ayeni, welcomed the project, saying it comes at a time when the school has been grappling with congestion due to increasing pupil enrolment. He said the school currently has 928 pupils, a number that has overstretched the available classroom space. According to Ayeni, the new facilities will mainly benefit learners in Primary Four, Five, Six and Seven, who have been the most affected by overcrowding.
Kwania District Inspector of Schools Milly Dansanse Apudu commended the Government of Japan for supporting education in the district. She said the project will significantly reduce shortages of classrooms, desks and sanitation facilities at the school.
Kwania District Chairperson George K.K. Akaca challenged the school administration, teachers and learners to translate the improved infrastructure into better academic performance. He pledged the district’s commitment to ensuring the facilities are properly maintained and used for their intended purpose.
Resident District Commissioner Arikwanga Richard Noon called on teachers to strengthen supervision of learners and urged parents to play a more active role in supporting their children’s education.
School Management Committee Chairperson Felix Owoo praised the Government of Japan for its continued support towards improving learning conditions in rural schools. Speaking on behalf of the learners, Amorigoga Primary School pupil Obada Gideon said the new facilities have created a better and safer learning environment. He pledged that learners would study hard and take good care of the infrastructure.
Amorigoga Primary School is a government-aided primary school located in Amorigoga A Village, Amorigoga Parish, Abongomola Sub-county, Kwania District, along the Aduku–Abongomola–Corner Agwata Road. The school was established in 1956 as a Church of Uganda-founded sub-grade school before being taken over by the government in 1982.
It currently has 17 teaching staff and serves hundreds of learners from Primary One to Primary Seven. The newly commissioned facilities are expected to improve learning conditions, reduce congestion and enhance access to quality education for pupils in the area-URN.
