Three fish dealers in Kasese District are in police cells after being found transporting about 800 kilograms of immature fish in violation of fisheries regulations. The suspects were arrested after security officers intercepted a Spico registration number UAX 419L carrying the fish packed in sacks.

According to Lt. Moses Atuyambe, the Sector Commander Kasese under the 115 Battalion, the vehicle was intercepted during an operation targeting illegal fishing activities and trade in undersized fish. The suspects were taken into custody for police investigations, after which the court ordered the confiscated fish to be destroyed through burning as part of enforcement measures against the sale of immature fish.

Lt. Atuyambe said operations against illegal fishing practices are continuing and urged fisheries dealers to comply with the regulations to avoid losses. He warned that continued trade in immature fish threatens the sustainability of fish stocks.

Paddy Muhindo, a fisheries official from Lake Katwe, said the fish measured about four inches, which is below the required market size. He called on fish dealers to follow the set standards, saying that protecting young fish is important for maintaining future fish production-URN.
