Over six tons of immature fish have been impounded at the Mpondwe border, in Kasese District, as authorities intensify efforts against illegal fishing activities.Lt. Moses Atuyambe, the Sector Commander of Kasese from the 115th Battalion, said they have been conducting operations for the past two weeks.
Lt. Katuyambe said his team discovered two stores stocked with immature fish and impounded them.
Lt. Atuyambe emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations, especially for those who have taken loans or received PDM (Production and Development Management) funds. He warned against investing such funds in illegal fish trading, stressing that law enforcement is committed to enforcing the Ministry of Fisheries and Animals’ laws, and illegal fish will not be tolerated in the market.
He further advised anyone interested in dealing with fish to first understand the legal requirements, particularly the size and type of fish. He reassured traders that no soldier will arrest anyone who complies with the regulations. When asked about the stance of local leaders on the issue, no officials had yet come forward to comment-URN.
