Former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been transferred from the Kiira Division police to Makindye Court, where he is expected to be charged with treason. By Wednesday morning, Lukwago was taken to Kira Division Police Headquarters in Kira Municipality, where he recorded a statement in the presence of his lawyer, Medard Lubega Ssegona. Most of his friends and family members were denied access to the station offices.
The heavy security deployment not only barred the suspect’s friends but also kept journalists away from the police premises. Police sources close to the investigations intimated to Uganda Radio Network that he will face charges related to treason. Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke did not deny the allegations, saying details of the charges would be provided in court.
Doreen Nyanjura, former Kampala Capital City Authority Deputy Lord Mayor, said they would not back off until they saw Lukwago’s condition, after police allegedly denied access to his medical doctors.
“His wife and other doctors were not allowed to meet him. We wait to see his condition, but the only person who met him, his lawyer Medard Ssegona, told us that he was not well,” Nyanjura said earlier at Kira Police Division.
Since Monday, Lukwago’s family and lawyers from Lukwago & Co Advocates have been moving from one police station to another searching for his whereabouts, but without success. Police and army officials remained tight-lipped.
