Katwe Police have arrested three suspected criminals found in possession of live ammunition, toy guns, and housebreaking tools allegedly used to terrorize residents of Makindye Division in Kampala. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala identified the suspects as George Muwanga, Mashood Ahumuz, and Kethier Ishimwe.
They were arrested on Thursday evening during an operation in Zikusooka Zone, Salaama, a suburb of Makindye Division. According to Kawala, the arrests followed information from residents who alerted police about two men allegedly attacking members of the public with pangas.
“A police team immediately responded to the information and conducted an operation at the suspected premises. Three suspects, including two men and one woman, were arrested,” Kawala said. A search of the premises led to the recovery of a backpack containing a toy gun, a metallic torch, a screwdriver, a sensor, a knife, several test tubes, ten rounds of live ammunition, and various housebreaking implements.
The suspects are currently in police custody pending further interrogation. Police say investigations are underway to establish the source of the ammunition and determine how the recovered items were being used.
The trio has been charged with possession of government stores and is being held at Katwe Police Division as security agencies continue the hunt for their alleged accomplices.
Police, together with other security agencies, have maintained intelligence-led operations across the Kampala Metropolitan Area aimed at combating crime.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ezekiel Emitu Ebapu, the operations are targeting criminal networks involved in robbery, narcotics abuse, housebreaking, phone snatching, and vandalism. The latest arrests form part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to enhance public safety and disrupt criminal activities within Kampala and its surrounding areas-URN.
