Busia district Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Jackline Masika, has urged schools to train students on fighting corruption in a bid to reduce the vice in the country. Speaking during the commissioning of 4,200 S.1 and S.5 students, Masika said that through patriotism, one gets the spirit of loving their country.
She appealed to the trained students to always observe discipline, aim at studying, and to do things that can help their communities to develop and practice environmental conservation.
Gabriel G Barasa Makanga, the Busia district senior education officer, said that the patriotism training has helped to reduce strikes that used to be in schools. There’s a challenge that all schools have not fully embraced, though the education policy requires them to participate. They have hope that every student who undergoes patriotism training can help in fighting corruption.
Aggrey Mayende, the Busia district patriotism coordinator, said that they have challenges of insufficient funding and a lack of training materials for the students, like uniforms, a concern they want the government to consider. He noted that they still have trainers with old training skills due to a lack of the latest training manuals.
Sadiq Amin Agele, the Busia town mayor, said that there is a need to modify the Masafu town council grounds by planting grass (paspalum) where students normally go for pass-out after their training. He called for unity among leaders without looking at political parties for Busia to develop.
John Charles Namayindi, the Busia district Chaiperson, appealed to the students who underwent patriotism training to abstain from sex to prevent them from contracting HIV/AIDs and put much focus on their education-URN.
