Calls for a thorough investigation into the death of Kakumiro District Youth Council Chairperson Ronald Kitone intensified on Wednesday, with leaders demanding accountability for police officers allegedly involved in the incident.

The calls were made during Kitone’s burial in Mboga LC I, Kikwaya Sub-county, where mourners, political leaders, and youth representatives condemned the circumstances surrounding the 26-year-old’s death and urged authorities to ensure justice is served. Kitone reportedly died after he was allegedly tear-gassed by police officers attached to Kikwaya Police Station who had gone to arrest him over a family dispute involving his father, Semuka Fabiyano.

Addressing mourners, Minister-designate for Works and Transport and Bugangaizi West MP Fred Byamukama described the deceased as a promising young leader whose future held great expectations for both Kakumiro District and Uganda. Byamukama said the circumstances surrounding Kitone’s death pointed to unprofessional conduct by some police officers. He urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue and pledged to work with security agencies to ensure that anyone found culpable is arrested and prosecuted.

The burial attracted several political leaders from both local and central government, youth leaders, and hundreds of mourners from across the district. National NRM Youth League Chairperson Collins Tanga Odoi also criticized the Uganda Police Force over the incident and called for comprehensive investigations into the youth leader’s death. Tanga said youth leaders across the country were dissatisfied with the circumstances under which Kitone died and urged police authorities and other government agencies to ensure justice is served.

The National Female Youth Member of Parliament, Mercy Kanyesige, paid tribute to Kitone, describing him as a disciplined, sociable, and committed leader who served his community with dedication. She said his death was a major loss to the youth leadership structure and the people of Kakumiro District.

Kitone died at the age of 26. The Kakumiro District Police Commander, David Otabong, said investigations into the circumstances surrounding the youth leader’s death are ongoing and assured mourners that action will be taken against anyone found responsible-URN.
