Tension is mounting in Kakumiro District following two violent incidents in Kikwaya Sub-county, where a youth leader died during a police operation, and another man was lynched by a mob in a separate case of alleged theft. The deceased include Ronald Kitone, the district youth chairperson and son of businessman Semuka Fabiyano of Kikwaya Trading Centre.
Kitone reportedly died on Monday morning after allegedly being teargassed by officers from Kikwaya Police Station during an attempted arrest linked to family-related disputes. His death sparked anger among residents, with some accusing members of his family of being connected to the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Kakumiro District Police Commander SP David Otabong later arrived at the scene and appealed for calm, saying investigations into the matter had commenced. He also assured residents that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted.English Audio
In a separate but related surge of violence in Kikwaya Sub-county, an angry mob in Kasojo LC1, Kigando Parish, Kijangi Sub-county, lynched a man in his 20s after allegedly finding him with two stolen goats.The deceased was identified as Tilinawe Alinda, son of Silivatore Sendegeya, both residents of the area.
Some residents said the deceased was part of a group of suspected thieves operating in the community and called for increased security measures, including night patrols, to curb rising theft cases.Runyoro Audio
The father of the deceased, Silvestre Sendegeya, confirmed that his son had been involved in theft and said he had previously tried to advise him to change his behaviour.Runyoro Audio
Kasozi LC1 chairperson Andrew Kyaligonza condemned the incident and urged young people to engage in productive activities instead of crime.
Meanwhile, Kijangi and Kikwaya sub-counties district councillor Omuhereza Nasazi Ayesiga, also known as “Kyoma Kyamudachi,” condemned mob justice and urged residents to report suspects to authorities rather than take the law into their own hands-URN.
