Residents of Rukungiri District are set to benefit from improved transport infrastructure after the district council approved UGX 1.87 billion for the maintenance of roads, bridges, and culverts in the 2026/2027 financial year. The allocation forms part of the district’s UGX 69.1 billion budget, with the Roads and Engineering Department earmarked to implement works covering 20 district roads stretching approximately 170 kilometres.

According to works department documents, the interventions will be implemented under the Road Maintenance Grant (RMG) for mechanized maintenance and the Uganda Road Fund (URF) for routine manual maintenance. Under the mechanized maintenance programme, 12 roads covering 90.6 kilometres are scheduled for rehabilitation.

These include key routes such as Kikarara–Garuka–Kyabahanga, Mabanga–Kahengye, Nyabikuku–Rwakigaju, and Kabaranga–Murago–Nyakisorora, among others, aimed at improving connectivity between trading centres and rural communities. A further eight roads covering 80 kilometres will be maintained under the routine manual maintenance programme, including major stretches like Rukungiri–Rubabo–Nyarushanje Road and Buyanja–Nyakagyeme Road, which are critical for agricultural transport and access to markets.

The district has also prioritised four major bridge and culvert projects intended to reduce flooding and improve road durability during rainy seasons. These include installations at Mugina water crossing along Kabaranga–Murago–Nyakisorora Road, repairs of steel culverts along Nyakishenyi–Marashanino–Kyabamba Road, and drainage works at Buturwa water crossing along Kisiizi–Nyarurambi–Kamaga Road. The district will also procure and install 433 reinforced concrete culverts across key road sections.

Officials say the planned infrastructure upgrades are expected to ease the movement of goods and people, improve access to services, and support agricultural trade across Rukungiri District-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
