Police in Kwania District have launched investigations into the death of a Senior Four student at Abongomola Seed Secondary School, following a suspected mob attack by fellow students.

The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Solomon Lukori, a resident of Emeny village in Chawente Sub-county. He was on Tuesday night allegedly assaulted by a group of students who accused him of stealing fellow students’ property.

By Wednesday afternoon, authorities at Kwania Central Police Station had detained the school’s head teacher Ashirafu Ssemanda, teachers who were on duty at that time, along two student leaders, to record statements and assist with ongoing investigations. The Lukori’s body was taken to Aduku HC IV for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Arinda Alison, the Kwania District Police Commander (DPC) confirm that the incident may have been an act of mob justice, raising concerns about discipline and supervision within the school. He added that investigations are ongoing.

Alex Opara, a member of the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) described the incident as unlawful and barbaric, saying the culprits should face the law. He also implored police to consider taking community policing to schools to curb such crimes.

Solomon Ocen, a student of the school told reporters that Lukori was allegedly found in possession of a bucket and jerrican he allegedly stole with intent to sell to the community outside the school. Ocen who said he only heard about Lukori’s death in the morning was quick to note that he had not heard any allegation of theft against Lukori before.

Meanwhile Dickens Otema, father to the deceased student rubbished the allegation of theft levied on his child, saying he was a disciplined and polite child whose life has been nothing but peaceful. He is calling for accountability and justice for his son.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents, with growing calls for accountability and stronger safety measures in schools. Richard Noon Arikwanga, the Kwania Resident District Commissioner condemned the incident saying actions must be taken to avoid a re-occurrence of such incidents in school.

Arikwanga also raised concern about the operations of boarding section in secondary schools, noting that some of them do not have the required facilities to manage students.

This is the second time that students are taking the laws into their own hands in a mob action. Some years ago, students of Nambieso Agro- Secondary School beat up and killed a parent whom they accused of witchcraft.
