The Kasese Catholic Diocese on Wednesday inaugurated the Martyrs Memorial Forests at Uganda Martyrs Nyakasanga Catholic Church in Nyakasanga.
The initiative is part of the Diocese’s preparations for this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day. It is also part of its commitment to advancing environmental conservation. Kasese Diocese will lead the 2026 Uganda Martyrs Celebrations at Namugongo.
Rt. Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira Kambale emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the environment and urged all dioceses to prioritize tree planting each year.
He also revealed that foot pilgrims journeying from Kasese to Namugongo will participate in planting trees at designated spots across various dioceses along their route, emphasizing the importance of merging faith and environmental stewardship.
Meanwhile, the Anglican Bishop Rt. Rev. Baluku Nason emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, noting that before baptizing children, he instructed that each child’s family should plant a tree at their parish, reinforcing the church’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Bishop Nason also contributed three million Ugandan shillings towards the upcoming Namugongo Martyrs celebrations, demonstrating his support and dedication to the national religious event.
His call for tree planting aims to instill environmental awareness and to promote sustainable practices across the diocese.
Reverend Father Anyasio Mbusa, director of Caritas Kasese, pledged to donate trees for the cause.
He confirmed that they have a variety of tree species available for those willing to participate in environmental conservation efforts.
Father Mbusa encouraged community members and the faithful to take part in the initiative, suggesting that they can even create their own “Garden of Martyrs” by planting trees in honor of the Uganda Martyrs.
