In his song titled akatengo (which is the Luganda word for fear & cowardice), the NUP president Kyagulanyi castigated young Ugandans who are too terrified to step forward and fight for freedom.
In the song Kyagulanyi claims that Museveni and his friends who are controlling the politics, police and the army are bigger cowards except that people need to overcome their own fear. He says overcoming fear is the only way the Museveni dictatorship will end.
Yet by going into hiding fearing to be harmed by the regime, Kyagulanyi has failed his own test and showed himself to be the biggest coward of the country called Uganda. He is supposed to lead his followers in demanding their victory, called the kabanje phase, instead of going into hiding.
But it’s also true he is a very lucky man because the cowardice he has showed by going into hiding, instead of being available and daring the regime to arrest him and bring up whatever charges they have, in the past caused the likes of Ken Lukyamuzi to be disregarded and rejected by voters.
One time as Lubaga south MP, Ken organized a rally and when he saw police he escaped and hid in the yams gardens near Nalukolongo water channel. His guests and fellow MPs like Regan Okumu remained behind and dared police to arrest them but they also criticized Ken for being such a cowardly politician.
The Kampala media covered this story widely and comedy kits were made ridiculing Ken the man who at the next elections of 2016 voters turned against on the account of being cowardly and voted in Kato Lubwama. That was the end of Ken who has lost all following elections since 2016. Kampala voters couldn’t put up with a coward leading them yet Kyagulanyi has showed extreme cowardice and kept getting away with it.
One time like 2 years ago, he saw police patrols passing by at Kamwokya as he addressed reporters and nervously fled his own press conference while declaring ‘kati awo ndowoza nebwentema [meaning it’s now okay for me to flee].’
Voters never punished him like Ken, instead he became more popular as the word ‘nebwentema’ became a slogan and trended online for months.
Even now as he hides, without even sending out any clear message to his supporters guiding them on what to do to protest the claimed rigging of his vote, many voters are still sympathetic with many of them saying he is right to hide because, in their own words, that’s the only way he can escape and dodge being assassinated by people in government. The dude must have been born lucky and it remains to be seen for how long is he going to keep duping his gullible followers and keep getting away with it.
Kyagulanyi’s disappearance act has set a new standard for the rest of the NUP leaders with Mubarak Munyagwa wondering why the party’s more than 40 newly elected MPs aren’t continuing to rally people to demand for their man’s victory under the protest vote arrangement.
Munyagwa now says the katengo which Kyagulanyi sang about has caught and dominated all the big people at Kavule including secretary general Rubongoya who has been ringing some individual NUP members and leaders, who had been outspoken, advising them to shun radio/TV talk shows, switch off their phones, abandon their known homes and go into hiding.
Munyagwa says that as ‘Bobi Wine becomes Bobi Hidden,’ most of the new NUP MPs are fearing to even utter the word protest vote because they know Museveni will do a Justine Namere and get some cadre Magistrate to fix them through illegal vote recount episodes for their seats to be given to their NRM competitors.
He adds that the leaders like Rubongoya who didn’t win their MP seats are fearing arrest which is why they have gone in katengo mode, are reluctant to attent media talk shows and can’t even address a press conference to tell supporters and foot soldiers what to do next. Munyagwa says the likes of Joel Senyonyi, Lutamaguzi are selfish cowards who are about self-enrichment and can’t risk for Kyagulanyi or even the bigger struggle.
He wonders why Lutamaguzi who used to excite foot soldiers with hard talk can’t even risk going to Kyagulanyi’s Magere home to show solidarity to Barbie, the children and their shamba boys who continue to live under military siege and occupation.
Munyagwa says voters and foot soldiers should count their losses and plan to start the new struggle afresh because there is no leadership that the katengo-stricken Rubongoya, Kyagulanyi and Joel Ssenyonyi are going to give to fearlessly confront Museveni in the next five years.
He says that instead of leading the protest vote as he promised, Kyagulanyi, Rubongoya, Ssenyonyi and others have resorted to using Fred Lumbuye and faded singer Kazibwe Kapo to record lousy tik tok videos telling lies against former presidential candidates like himself and Robert Kasibante who has challenged Museveni in the supreme court.
He says the foot soldiers shouldn’t accept such diversions and should instead demand that Kyagulanyi, Rubongoya and Ssenyonyi keep their work by coming out of the hiding and leading the protest vote campaign because voters did their part on January 15th by casting their vote which Kavule promised to protect through protest vote and the ‘eggaali’ approach.
