The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party’s Presidential candidate, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, promised to allocate one hundred million shillings to each village if elected to the statehouse in the 2026 general election.
According to Mafabi, this initiative will help address poverty in the country because the funds will be invested in various enterprises that can generate additional income. Mafabi said that the money will be offered in the form of a grant to the villages.
He has indicated that the grant will replace the Parish Development Model (PDM), an initiative by the ruling government for accelerating wealth creation and improving the quality of life of Ugandans by bringing services closer to them.
Under this, each parish received beneficiary will receive one million shillings as a grant for their enterprises.
At some of his stopovers in Terego District, Mafabi told residents in Ocodri Trading Centre and Leju Town Council that he would fulfil the promise in his first term of five years as president, and the money would be disbursed to all the villages in Uganda.
Uganda Bureau of Statistics indicates that there are currently 71,227 villages in the country.
If each of these receives the UGX 100 million grant, Mafabi’s government will have to disburse UGX 7.1 trillion in the first year.
For five years of his term in office, he will need UGX 35.6 trillion ( UGX 35,613,500,000 ) to fulfil his promise before the next general election. Mafabi said that the money can be generated internally once the rampant corruption across the country is ended. He attributed the poor state of services to corruption,
Rahma Ajio, a resident of Terego District, welcomed Mafabi’s initiative for the annual grant to villages, stating that it is not easy to benefit from the current Parish Development Model funding.
“There is segregation in the selection of PDM beneficiaries, and sometimes the money does not reach people completely. I have not yet benefited from PDM even after submitting all the requirements,” Ajio said.
The Deputy President of FDC for Northern Uganda and Obongi Constituency parliamentary flag-bearer, Hassan Kaps Fungaroo, rallies support for Mafabi as president based on his vision and the party manifesto to address challenges in the country.
