The territorial Police of Arua City Central Business Division has arrested 93 suspects in an intelligence-led disruptive operation.
According to Josephine Angucia, the Police Spokesperson for West Nile, the operation was conducted at sports betting centers along Barzaar Ward in Arua Central Division and surrounding areas within Arua city.
” A total of 93 male suspects were arrested for various offences such as illegal possession of narcotic substances, illegal possession of dangerous weapons, and other related cases pending investigations,” Angucia said.
Angucia added that upon sanctioning their case files, the suspects will be taken to court to answer to the various charges.
The arrests followed public outcry in the central division on house break-ins, broad-day robberies, and snatching of bags by gangs.
With support from the LCs, the Police and the UPDF led an operation leading to the arrests.
The suspects were with the help of local leaders, 39 were charged with rogue and vagabonds. The charges were sanctioned by the Resident State Attorney of Arua.
They were expected to be arraigned before the court later on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the rest were released with the help of local leaders after serious caution.
The suspects were reportedly screened with the help of local leaders, and half of them were charged with various offences, while others were cautioned and set free.
Police say this operation to clean Arua City will continue until sanity returns to the City.
Despite regular patrols by security personnel, security in Arua City remains fragile as more criminals continue to emerge.
According to security sources, some of the gang members are returnees from South Sudan, while others are incomers from other places like Kampala City.
