At least 60 suspected criminals have been arrested in connection with a series of aggravated robberies that struck Katungu, Ibaare, and Bwegiragye villages in Ishaka Division, Bushenyi District, on the night of October 9, 2025. The detainees include 56 men and four women.
The suspects, aged between 16 and 35, come from Kizinda, Ishaka Division, Butare-Kyamuhunga, and neighbouring areas within the district. They are believed to have participated in or aided the robberies, which occurred simultaneously across the three villages, during which armed assailants attacked homes, injured residents, and stole valuables.
Apollo Tayebwa, the Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson, said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted between October 10 and October 12. He added that the suspects are currently being screened as part of ongoing investigations and will be arraigned in court once the process is complete.
“Police are working closely with local leaders and sister security agencies to identify those who will be implicated by evidence,” Tayebwa said.
Emmy Ngabirano, the Bushenyi District Resident Commissioner, added that the district security committee met on Monday and agreed to intensify patrols to prevent further incidents.
However, some residents, including Abel Tumuramye of Kizinda, criticised the police for what they perceive as a delayed response, arguing that slow action has contributed to the recent surge in crime. “The police only respond at the peak of the crimes,” Tumuramye said.
