Police in the Mt Moroto Region have received 49 motorcycles to strengthen mobility, community policing and rapid response to incidents under the Sub-County Policing Model. The motorcycles began arriving at the Mt Moroto Regional Police offices in Moroto Municipality on Friday, with more expected to be delivered.
Mt Moroto Regional Police spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the receipt, saying the motorcycles would improve police operations at sub-county level across the region. Longole said the motorcycles will support patrols, community engagement, rapid response and supervision of police activities.
“We appreciate the Inspector General of Police for the logistical support,” Longole said. The motorcycles will be distributed across the five districts that make up the Mt Moroto Region — Moroto, Napak, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit and Amudat. Longole said the motorcycles would be strictly used for police duties in accordance with the Sub-County Policing Model.
“We pledge proper use and maintenance of the motorcycles for improved service delivery and security,” he said. The Sub-County Policing Model is part of the Uganda Police Force’s restructuring programme introduced following a presidential directive issued in 2019/2020.
Under the model, police have moved from maintaining several small posts with a few officers to establishing one fully equipped police station in each sub-county, municipal division and town council. Each sub-county station is expected to have 18 officers, including the Officer in Charge of the station, 12 general duty officers responsible for patrols, a Criminal Investigations Department officer, a Crime Intelligence officer, a Child and Family Protection officer, a Community Liaison Officer and an overall commander.
Each station is also allocated three motorcycles to support operations, with two specifically designated for emergency response. The model provides for a dedicated station telephone number that is publicised within the community, as well as radio communication equipment to facilitate real-time response to incidents.
