Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Member of Parliament for Lira City, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to her constituents by supporting 880 registered groups with grants worth Shs440m. This initiative, a fulfillment of a promise she made during her 2020 campaigning period, has significantly impacted the lives of the beneficiaries.

Unlike other leaders in the Lango sub-region who provide loans to constituents as opposed to giving it out as grants, Dr. Aceng adopted a distinctive and sustainable approach.

In her case, she opted to issue non-repayable grants ensuring that the beneficiaries could focus on building their enterprises without having the endure the trauma of repayment. This decision set her apart as a visionary leader who is caring and committed to long-term community development and transformation.

Dr. Aceng meticulously mapped and compiled lists of registered groups in Lira City based on their location and enterprise. The initiative benefited a wide array of groups including: Women’s groups, Youth groups, People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and Widows’ groups. Each group received a cash grant of Shs500,000 to invest in their respective activities of their choice.

The grants were targeted at groups already involved in various income-generating enterprises, such as: Poultry farming, Goat rearing, Piggery, Village Saving and Loan Associations (VSLA) and Tree planting.

This strategic support and intervention has enabled the groups to expand their ventures, improve their livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.

The initiative has brought significant change to the lives of the beneficiaries. Unlike loans, which often lead to financial strain with some living with the prospect of prison or even loss of property, Aceng’s grants have empowered communities to grow their enterprises without fear of debt.

And by addressing the needs of diverse groups and enterprises, Dr. Aceng’s intervention has created a ripple effect of development across Lira City.

Dr. Aceng’s commitment to her constituents is consistent with her visionary leadership. By prioritizing sustainable empowerment over temporary solutions, she has laid a foundation for long-term development in Lira City and in the process set such a high standard on which future City leaders will always be measured.

Her approach serves as an inspiring example for other leaders to follow, proving that thoughtful and community-centered initiatives can lead to meaningful change and visible transformation of communities.

Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero has not only fulfilled her campaign promise but has also redefined what it means to serve with purpose and integrity. Her actions will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy in Lira City and cause her to always be remembered for an eternity. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
