Rising Poverty in Kigezi Puts Focus on SACCO Investment

As the cost of living tightens and household incomes come under pressure, members of Kihanga Mparo SACCO have been urged to prioritise savings, investment and disciplined borrowing to stay afloat and grow their incomes.

The call came during the SACCO’s 20th Annual General Meeting held at its head office in Mparo, Rukiga District, under the theme “Securing a Sustainable Future.”

UPDF Political Commissar Maj. Gen. Henry Matsiko, who was the chief guest, asked members to focus on long-term wealth creation rather than quick returns. He said even small pieces of land can generate income if well managed.

Matsiko also pointed to the role of SACCOs in offering structured and affordable financial support, describing them as a safer alternative to informal money lenders. He encouraged members to plan their finances and invest with a clear purpose.

Concerns were also raised over rising poverty levels in the region. The Rukiga District Commercial Officer said poverty in Kigezi has increased from 23 percent to 27 percent, despite a general decline at the national level.

He linked the rise to low participation in sustainable income-generating activities and urged residents to invest in productive sectors, especially agriculture. Farmers were advised to adopt commercial farming and consider high-value crops such as Hass avocados, alongside proper use of fertilizers to improve yields.

Members were also cautioned against risky financial practices, including borrowing on behalf of others and relying heavily on digital loan platforms, which officials said expose users to debt and defaults.

Meanwhile, SACCO Manager Innocent Turyasingura said the cooperative plans to roll out mobile banking services to improve access to financial services and speed up loan processing, particularly for rural farmers.

The meeting also marked 20 years of the SACCO’s operations, with leaders urging members to maintain financial discipline and remain committed to saving and investment as the foundation for long-term stability.
