Police in Luwero District have arrested Benjamin Olupot to assist with investigations into the suspected strangulation of his wife, Hellen Nakirya, 34.
The incident occurred at their home in Bukalasa Village, Wobulenzi Town Council. Police report that the events began on Saturday, February 14, 2026, when Nakirya called one of her husband’s male friends, complaining that Olupot was involved with another woman who allegedly abused her. The friend reportedly counselled her.
On Sunday, February 15, the couple went to bed, but at around 3:00 a.m., Nakirya allegedly began crying and accusing her husband of infidelity. Olupot left the house briefly to contact his friend Isma Serwadda for assistance.
He later returned home alone, reportedly finding his wife hanging from a piece of cloth inside the house. Neighbors and the local LC1 chairperson were alerted, and police were notified. Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima told Uganda Radio Network (URN) that a case of suspected suicide by hanging has been registered.
The body, which had no visible external injuries, was taken to Luwero General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Pr
Initial findings indicate that Nakirya had reportedly threatened self-harm over her husband’s alleged relationship with another woman. The post-mortem report lists asphyxia from strangulation as the cause of death.
